Founded in 1867, Truman State University is a highly selective public liberal arts college.
The school is located northeast of Kirksville, Missouri, and is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.
Truman State University is named after U.S. President Harry Truman, and is the only President born in the state.
Until 1996, the school was known as Northeast Missouri State University.
The name change also brought with it a change in the school’s mission to better reflect the overall mission of the state.
Rooted in the liberal arts, Truman State’s mission is to provide a model undergraduate education that prepares students well for their future careers.
Truman State currently has more than 6,000 students.
The majors offered by the school include: Accounting, biology, education, communication disorders, English, music, economics, history, linguistics, political science, sociology/anthropology, Romance language, Russian, computer science, etc.
For the past 12 years, Truman State University has been ranked no. 1 among public universities in the Master’s degree category in the Midwest by US News & World Report in 2009.
