The University of Toronto is one of Canada’s oldest and most famous public universities. It was founded in 1827 by The Royal Charter issued by George IV of the United Kingdom. It is the earliest institution of higher learning in colonial Canada.
It was called King’s College in its early days until it secited the Anglican Church in 1849 and became a secular university under its present name.
Influenced by the British university system, the University of Toronto is one of the few universities in America that implement independent college system, and each college enjoys a high degree of autonomy.
The University of Toronto has three campuses, St George Campus in downtown Toronto, which is also the main Campus of the University.
